Parce qu’elle aime plus que tout comprendre, savoir, découvrir, et parce que son apparente naïveté et son indolence font d’elle une redoutable espionne que personne ne saurait soupçonner, Faith commence à saisir, bribe par bribe, la vérité… Une vérité qu’elle ne peut accepter. Son père, cet homme droit, austère, érudit, qu’elle ne peut s’empêcher de vénérer, aurait falsifié certaines de ses découvertes ? Impossible. Et pourtant…
Sur l’île de Vane, la lourde ambiance accompagnant l’arrivée de la famille Sunderly – le pasteur, son épouse Myrtle, Faith, son jeune frère Howard et son oncle Miles – devient plus pesante encore lorsque les rumeurs parviennent jusqu’au champ de fouille… Les voilà persona non grata, situation inacceptable pour Myrtle, inconcevable pour le pasteur, incompréhensible pour Faith, qui ne parvient à donner du sens aux mystères qui les entourent. Comme cette étrange demande de son père de l’accompagner de nuit dans une grotte battue par les flots, pour y cacher un objet inconnu…
Puis le malheur survient, implacable. Le pasteur est retrouvé mort. Il aurait chuté. Volontairement ?
L’enjeu est grand, les suicidés n’ayant droit – dans leur péché – à une sépulture au cimetière. Pour Myrtle, c’est une question d’honneur et d’argent. Pour Faith, c’est une vérité à découvrir. Le pasteur s’est-il réellement suicidé pour fuir le scandale ? Ou bien l’a-t-on assassiné ? Et pourquoi..? Cela a-t-il un rapport avec cet objet déposé dans la grotte, auquel son père semblait tenir plus qu’à sa propre fille ? Et quelle est cette transe étrange dans laquelle Faith l’a découverte un soir, les yeux jaunis, dans le vide ?…
Ce roman a été pour moi un immense coup de cœur ! ♥
Parce qu’il est très bien écrit, déjà, mais aussi – et surtout – parce que Frances Harding parvient, avec beaucoup de talent et d’audace, à mêler les genres et à donner à son récit une vraie profondeur, portée par de vraies questions.
Notre lecture débute par un récit d’adolescence, celui de la jeune Faith, plus vraiment une enfant, mais pas encore une adulte. Un thème très classique de la littérature « ado », si ce n’est qu’ici, le versant historique du récit vient renforcer cet entre-deux. Pour Faith, devenir une femme, c’est renoncer. Non pas tant à l’enfance, à ses jeux et à ses libertés, mais à la tolérance dont on faisait preuve face à sa soif de savoir. Devenir une femme, c’est se taire pour ne pas heurter la sensibilité de ces savants qui pensent que puisque le crâne des femmes est plus petit que celui des hommes, leur intelligence est logiquement limitée. Devenir une femme, c’est porter un corset, boire le thé, apprendre à doser les règles de la bonne société. Et trouver un mari, bien sûr. Des projets bien loin des rêves de Faith, qui n’a qu’une envie : suivre les traces de son père et devenir à son tour naturaliste.
Mais le choix de la période historique va au-delà du simple prétexte. 1860, ce sont les lendemains de la publication par Darwin de son ouvrage De l’origine des espèces, véritable cataclysme dans le milieu scientifique. Comment – en effet – faire coïncider religion et évolution ? Comment ne pas renier la foi, le créationnisme, quand des preuves scientifiques, tangibles, pointent un monde bien plus ancien que celui que Dieu aurait créé ? Comment, en toute honnêteté intellectuelle, se prétendre à la fois pasteur et naturaliste ? Homme de Dieu et scientifique ? Cette question passionnante* est l’un des véritables enjeux de ce roman, l’une des clés du mystère qui s’étend sur l’île de Vane…
Puis, soudain, le fantastique vient s’immiscer dans le récit, qui prend alors une tournure, une ampleur toutes différentes, avant que le roman ne se transforme parallèlement en enquête policière : Faith est persuadée que son père a été assassiné et doit impérativement le prouver pour que sa famille et la réputation de celle-ci ne soient pas détruites. Mais l’amour et le respect que la jeune fille vouaient à son père, sa haine vis-à-vis de ce ou ces coupables qu’elle cherche à débusquer viennent interroger un tout autre sentiment que celui de la seule justice : ce que Faith veut, c’est une vengeance. Sera-t-elle prête alors à en payer le prix ?

Des dizaines de milliers, des centaines de milliers voire des millions d’années… et plus les temps obscurs s’étendaient, plus la glorieuse humanité rétrécissait. L’homme n’avait pas été présent dès le début, et la création ne lui avait pas été offerte. Non, il n’était qu’un tard-venu, dont les ancêtres s’étaient péniblement arrachés à la boue pour se trainer sur la terre.
La Bible ne mentait pas. Tout scientifique honnête et pieux le savait. Mais les roches, les fossiles et les ossements ne mentaient pas non plus, et on avait de plus en plus l’impression qu’ils ne racontaient pas la même histoire. »
